We have already written about how to sew an ordinary medical mask from cotton fabric easily and quickly here. In the same article, I would like to show another simple algorithm for sewing a protective reusable face mask made of fabric, but with a pocket for a replaceable filter, which will significantly increase the protective function of this product due to the ability to insert filter material into it. Such a mask is reusable, and the filter embedded in it is disposable. You just need to change it in it as you use it (every 2-3 hours) and that's it. The filter itself must be made of a material with very small pores (up to 0.07 microns) to be able to capture small biological particles. The filter properties of the mask will be primarily determined by the material from which you install a protective liner in it.
The best option for such a filter insert is materials such as cotton wool, non-woven polypropylene material such as Meltblown or Aquaspan, which have a low density of individual polymer filaments.
What is necessary for sewing such a mask:
- fabric, elastic band
- scissors, ruler
- refilled sewing machine (or needle and thread)
Calculate the cost for sewing such a mask and evaluate the economic efficiency of the volume produced here.
Now we go directly to the step-by-step algorithm for sewing such a protective reusable face mask with a replaceable filter of standard size (for an adult) 15x20 cm:
Step 1-prepare two pieces of fabric
White segment - 15x20 cm (under the filter pocket)
Gray segment - 20x25 cm (under the base of the mask)
First, we process the edges of the segment under the pocket (white fabric).
From each edge we make bends in two additions and sew them on a typewriter (or manually). The total size of the fabric under the bend of one edge is 2.5 cm. That is, the two edges will take 5 cm.
After processing the edges, a blank of 15x15 cm was obtained
We bend the second piece of fabric (gray fabric) under the base of the mask in 2 additions for the subsequent centering of our pocket (made of white fabric) on it.
Step 2-center and sew the pocket into the base of the mask
We make a double bend from the top edge of the base so that the top of the pocket is under it (the white zogotovka should go under the bend of the gray fabric). Then we make a line.
When sewing the upper bend (gray fabric), we will lay a pre-prepared paper clip in the central part of the future groove (preferably in isolation-for greater flexibility). This clip will serve as a nose holder for the protective mask.
After that, we finish the upper bend to the end.
We will temporarily stop the paper clip located in the groove with a needle for its stability during further operations.
We sew the lower bend, similar to the upper one (only without a paper clip).
Step 3-make bends from the side ends of the mask base under the grooves for elastic bands
We make a bend (with the formed groove) and sew it. On one side, the bend will take 2.5 cm.
In the places where the corners are joined, we make a "pinning" with a sewing machine-forward and reverse the needle (reverse function) - to create stable nodal joints
Similarly, we make a bend under the elastic band and on the opposite side.
Step 4-stop the sewn paper clip under the nose bend in the upper groove of the mask base
Again, we make the stopper with the help of "pinning" - forward and reverse movement of the needle (the function of the reverse of the sewing machine) to create knots.
Step 5-pull the elastic band through the side grooves and the protective mask is ready.
